Electrical Power system :It is a large network consisting of power generating plants connected to consumer loads. Broadly speaking, it consists of Generating Station, Transmission System and Distribution System of electric Power. The generating station produces electric power by parallel connected alternators at convenient voltages at 11KV,11.5KV,12KV or 13 KV. These electric power are converted to different voltage levels such as 132KV,220KV,400KV,500KV,765KV through step up power transformer.

Generating Stations (Power plants):

All over the world there are following types of power plants are available.

  • Thermal power plant
  • Hydel power plant (Hydro-electric)
  • Nuclear power plant
  • Diesel power plant
  • Gas power plant
  • Solar power plant
  • Tidal power plant
  • Wind power plant.

Brief Description on each type of Power Plant:

THERMAL POWER PLANT:

In this type power plant , electrical power is generated by conversion heat energy into electrical energy. The heat energy used to produce high pressure steam in steam boiler which is used to drive a steam turbine. The steam turbine is connected to an electrical generator which generates electrical power.

HYDEL(HYDRO ELECTRIC) POWER STATION:

In this type of power Plant, the potential energy of a water head is converted to electrical energy. The high speed stream of water from the water head of dam is allowed to pass through pressure tunnel and in turn through penstock is made to rotate turbine. The turbine is connected to an alternator which generates an electrical power.

NUCLEAR POWER PLANT:

It is  that type of power plant thermal power plant in which  nuclear reactor is the main source of heat energy. It contains and controls nuclear chain reactions through fission.

DISEL POWER PLANT:

In diesel power plant,a diesel engine is used as a prime mover to rotate the rotor of a alternator to generate electrical energy.

GAS POWER PLANT:

In this type of power station, natural gas or a fossil fuel is burnt to form heat energy for generating electrical energy.
