Human Resource is a powerful asset for every nation but it becomes a liability unless its people is well educated, intellectually and professionally trained in different areas of practical fields. That is why, a country frames a most effective and efficient education policy for its people for achieving various types knowledge on various subjects on humanities to resume their professional careers, similarly in various technical fields to create technically qualified and trained population. Our motherland, India is also ready to compete with other developed nation to transform herself to a new incarnation,”Samrudhha Bharata,2047” through new education policy,2020.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 school education is restructured in our country with a 5+3+3+4 framework. This new structure corresponds to the age groups 3-8, 8-11, 11-14, and 14-18 years, respectively. It is emphasized on Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) with a mission to ensure universal access to education from pre-primary to secondary level. Some key elements are follows.
Foundational Stage (5 years):
This includes three years of pre-school (Anganwadi) and Grades 1-2, focusing on play-based learning, activity-based learning, and language development
Preparatory Stage (3 years):
Grades 3-5, building upon the foundational stage with a focus on language development, numeracy skills, and experiential learning.
Middle Stage (3 years):
Grades 6-8, introducing students to the critical learning objectives in sciences, mathematics, arts, social sciences, and humanities.
Secondary Stage (4 years):
Grades 9-12, divided into two phases (9-10 and 11-12), with in-depth study of subjects and greater flexibility in choosing subjects.
Other significant changes and focuses of NEP 2020 in basic education:
Universal Access: The policy aims to ensure 100% Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in school education by 2030.
Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE):
NEP 2020 mandates compulsory schooling from ages 3 to 18, with a strong emphasis on ECCE for children aged 3-6, recognizing its importance in cognitive development.
Multilingualism:
The policy promotes multilingualism and the use of the mother tongue/local language as the medium of instruction up to at least Grade 5, and preferably up to Grade 8 and beyond.
Holistic Development:
The policy moves beyond rote learning and emphasizes conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and the development of social and emotional skills.
Integration of Vocational Education:
There will be no hard separations between vocational and academic streams, with vocational education integrated into the curriculum from Grade 6 onwards.
Assessment Reforms:
The policy proposes significant changes to the assessment system, including conducting board exams on up to two occasions during any given school year, with a main examination and an improvement exam.
Focus on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy:
A National Mission will be established to ensure that all students achieve foundational literacy and numeracy skills by 2025.
Equitable and Inclusive Education:
The policy emphasizes providing equitable and inclusive education, with special attention to Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs) and the establishment of Special Education Zones.
